Preclinical Sciences
The Preclinical
Sciences Department within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is responsible
for establishing the basic scientific infrastructure in veterinary education.
This department provides students with comprehensive information on topics such
as etiopathogenesis of diseases, transmission routes, diagnostic techniques and
treatment principles before moving on to clinical courses. Students' analytical
thinking, diagnostic and scientific inquiry skills are developed through
laboratory-supported theoretical and practical training.
The Department of
Veterinary Pathology examines the pathogenesis of animal diseases and their
reflections at the tissue level. Students learn the macroscopic and microscopic
definition of diseases, cellular responses, tissue regeneration and tumor
formation processes. In the pathology laboratory, prepared tissue sections are
examined under a microscope; in addition, postmortem examination training is
provided with real case materials in the necropsy unit.
The Department of
Veterinary Microbiology focuses on topics such as the identification, isolation
of bacterial agents and determination of their antibiotic susceptibility. Gram
staining, culture techniques, biochemical tests and serological methods are actively
used in education. At the same time, importance is given to microbiological
information in terms of zoonotic diseases and public health.
The Department of
Veterinary Virology teaches the structure, replication strategies and infection
mechanisms of the agents that cause viral diseases in animals. Molecular and
immunological diagnostic methods such as PCR and ELISA are taught to students in
a practical way. Current topics such as viral zoonoses and antiviral drug
strategies are also included in the course content.
The Department of
Veterinary Parasitology focuses on the morphological characteristics, life
cycles and host effects of protozoa, helminths and arthropod parasites.
Parasites are identified from feces, tissue and blood samples with microscopic
examinations. Students are informed about transmission routes, protection
strategies and parasitic zoonoses.
The Department of
Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology teaches the effects of drugs on the
body, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties, drug interactions and side
effects. Practical information such as safe drug use in animals, regulations
regarding drug residues, mechanisms of action of toxic substances and use of
antidotes are taught to students.
Thanks to this
comprehensive education, the Department of Preclinical Sciences provides
students with a scientifically based preparation for veterinary medicine,
enabling them to transition to clinical practice with a solid and
interdisciplinary perspective.
